Event Report: Glasgow Re-Tech Meet up February 2024

Re-Tech VI

Re-Tech goes international

Ok, that’s not quite true.

However, it was our first Re-Tech outside of Bristol. For Re-Tech VI we headed North to Scotland’s largest city. This time it was Re-Tech Glasgow.

Our hosts for the evening were the very smart cookies at Bitbloom, who have recently upgraded their head office in the newly renovated Tontine building in the Trongate area of Glasgow. (If you are looking for some office space in the city, go check it out, it’s mega).

The Re-Tech buzz has been steadily building over the past few events. However, would the brand cope with being away from home? My early fears were pretty much smashed as soon as we launched the event and put tickets up for sale. Right from launch, the tickets got snapped up pretty steadily with a real rush in the last few days.

Oh you Johnny-come-lately-types, you do my nerves no good whatsoever.

In the end, we had a full house of 80 in attendance who came from all over Scotland and represented tech, consultancy, developer and funding ecosystems.

What went down

We had three speakers in Glasgow. Each one of them gave a truly remarkable and thought provoking session. And each one was so very different both in terms of content and delivery style. A huge shout out has to go to each of Michael Tinning, Claire Canning, and Francesco Vanni.

Michael took us on a journey into his mind on the past, present, and future of AI. I don’t think any of us have experienced 18th Century Twitter (X?) before, but I for one, am totally here for it.

Claire dropped the truth bombs we all needed to hear on funding applications. Do read the question, don’t just whack any old thing in and expect it to get the green light. Thank you Claire.

And Francesco gave us a real insight into life in large developer, attitudes to risk and how the decisions get taken. He did so in his own inimitable free-style delivery and he was at pains to tell us that he does not spend all day looking at spreadsheets.

Sure… we believe you.

WE LIVED LIKE KINGS

The quality of the content was matched with the food and drink on offer. A special mention here to our hosts Bitbloom and especially Sophie Kromholz, who arranged for burritos, tacos and a bottomless bar. (We did try).

IT GOT LATE

Each Re-Tech has it’s own subculture. Re-Tech Glasgow was no different. The room busy early. The talks were heavyweight. It got late. Like really way past my bed time late.

I think we left Tontine sometime after midnight and I cannot confirm or deny that a select group soldiered on to late bars in Glasgow pretty much to last last orders.

Oww my head.

WHAT NEXT?

Next up we are back Bristol. Re-Tech VII is going to take place on Wednesday 17th April and is on familiar turf as we return to the Future Leap Hub on Gloucester Road. Speakers are confirmed and tickets for that one are available now.

But the big question for me is not so much what next as where next? Re-Tech has legs, Re-Tech can travel. There are Renewables hubs around the country.

We’re now actively looking for sponsors, speakers and supporters to make the next event happen. And we like a road trip. If you’d like to get involved please get in touch with the Re-Tech team.
